Goodbye iPhone 3G

Posted on August 28th, 2008

Well it turns out I couldn’t live without certain features :) For the first time in nearly 5 years, I’m going around without a smart phone … kinda nice in a way to have just a simple, cheap phone that I can throw around but I’m sure I’ll be missing instant access to all my stuff.

So what was the deal killer – for primarily 2 things but I’d say 3 in total with MMS being the last straw.

The incredibly poor battery life, even with 3G, Wifi, LBS all turned off and only checking email every hour I could barely make a day and with very limited usage which is just nuts. I don’t care what anybody says, the iphone is a brick because of its crappy battery life. My earlier (and much loved) Blackberry Curve would go days with pretty heavy usage and a week with limited usage no problem. Also, why should I have to turn all my services off …

The phone is too fragile! issue number 1 for me, I don’t throw them around but I want something I feel comfortable with and it just doesn’t do that. I couldn’t find a case to help much either. I was dead scared to drop or damage such an expensive item :)

No MMS was something I hated, it is just pathetic it isn’t supported and the big release in September doesn’t promise any fixes for that or copy and paste so screw it.

I’ll have the blackberry bold the second it arrives for AT&T.

Gadget Features!

Posted on August 15th, 2008

I’ve thrown up a new site over the last week. It’s sole purpose is to track and gather information on the features we all really really need for our gadgets, phones and even operating systems.

Anybody can post a feature idea and can request for products to be added to the site.

Take a look and get voting! What Feature?

Yes, the site is called What Feature … do you know how hard it is to find a good domain name these days ;) I thought I did a fairly good job with that one.

iPhone Battery Tip

Posted on August 3rd, 2008

Just a quick note about an interesting discovery made for great battery saving on your iPhone, if you’ve been lucky enough to get one :)

Over the last week my battery life was extremely poor but I’d also had quite a few slow downs and lock ups. What is interesting is even if the phone locks up, it seems to recover after a few seconds without a reboot. Well a couple days ago my phone started getting really hot and the battery was dying in about 2 hours with no use …. so I rebooted the phone.

You can do this by holding in the lock button + menu button for awhile either until it just reboots or you pick an option from the system menu that appears.

After rebooting my battery is now lasting almost a full 2 days – I think some background processes get locked up and even though the phone appears to be working “ok” it is sucking down the juice. Worked for me, might work for you :)
